As Norfolk’s specialist in birth photography since 2013, I truly believe I have the best job in the world. Combining my two passions; photography and birthing (I also run NormalBirthing antenatal classes), I am privileged to tell the story of couples becoming parents as their babies take their first breaths. And that is about as special as it comes.
So, you’ve painted the nursery, stocked up on nappies, filled the wardrobe with adorably tiny outfits, researched the very best pushchair and car seat you can find, and attended all the birth preparation classes. You’re ready and waiting for the big day to arrive! But when it does, just like your wedding day, all your hard work and preparation flies by in a blur of emotion and the only thing you can remember is the hazy memories of a few fleeting happy moments.
Remember the day your lives changed forever with beautiful story-telling images.
“If a woman doesn’t look like a GODDESS in labour then someone isn’t treating her right.”
~Ina May Gaskin.
Gallery Contact Birth Stories
It’s very important that you are comfortable with me being around at your birth, so we’ll get together at least once before you book for a cup of tea (and probably cake!) and a chat about your plans.
We’ll discuss your birth plans, what images are important to you and how I can work with the rest of your birthing team to support you, all while capturing your family’s story.
From 38 weeks until your baby arrives, I will then be on call for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ready to be with you whenever your labour starts.
On The Day
I will come out to wherever you are once you are in established labour and discreetly blend into the background to allow you to focus on your birth. Being a birth professional, I am very respectful to the birthing environment, the couple’s need for peace and your midwives’ space to work. I take great pride how often I hear “I didn’t even realise you were there”!
Whilst I quietly go about my work capturing those once in a lifetime images we have previously discussed; I am also an extra pair of hands. So in quiet times you’ll often find me offering support, making everyone cups of tea, helping set up or pack down and generally just helping however I can.
After your baby is born I’ll be on hand for that magical first ‘golden hour’, as you and your baby meet each other for the first time. Capturing those first cuddles, smiles, feeds and loving glances. I’ll then stay on for approximately an hour more for the routine measuring and weighing, and possibly the meeting of siblings and grandparents, before leaving you to settle in to your new family life.
First Days / Fresh 48
Shortly after birth (usually within 3 days) we can arrange a relaxed un-posed lifestyle photography session, usually at your home, which is a wonderful way to remember your little one’s first days.
Please note this is not a traditional posed ‘newborn’ shoot; but instead is documentary photography, and a great time to capture special time with siblings and parents, the family home and new nursery, and of course some beautiful images of your baby – little fingers, toes, and sleepy faces – whilst they are so tiny.
These sessions can be incorporated into collections, or booked separately for those not wishing for a full birth photography service. First Days sessions make lovely gifts from friends and family members.
Welcoming a baby to the world is a wonderfully happy time, and as a proud parent you’ll no doubt be keen to share some photos of your new arrival to excited loved ones as soon as possible. I completely understand this and so I will share at least one preview image with you within 24 hours of birth, which you can use for birth announcements if you wish.
The rest of the images will be edited within 6 weeks, usually sooner, at which time we will arrange a viewing session for you to view your gallery and chose your favourite images.
I want you to have all the images you love to look back on for years to come, and so there are a variety of collections and a la carte options available to you, from stand alone images to beautiful hand made heirloom albums and story boxes.
Due to the on call nature of birth photography, and the uncertainty of when I will be needed, I am only able to take a 1-2 bookings in one month. For this reason I really do recommend you book as soon as possible in your pregnancy to avoid disappointment.
I am unable to take bookings for babies due in June, July, August and early September, due to expecting my own baby this summer! I am however taking bookings for October onwards and have Spring 2019 availability.
By being on call 24hrs a day, 7 days a week, I often have to put family events and other workloads on hold. I have a wonderful network of support around me which means I can arrange childcare at very short notice and be with you quickly. Please understand that I am unable to rearrange wedding photography clients, which is why I only book one wedding a month to minimise the impact on my birth clients.
Please do get in touch to discuss my availability for the time your baby is due to arrive.
A little about me
I have been working as a birth professional since I trained to teach the Marie Mongan Method of Hypnobirthing in 2012; following the amazing hospital hypnobirth of my eldest son in 2011, and just before my youngest son’s wonderful homebirth in 2013.
(Pictured right is moments after his birth!)
Since then I have worked passionately to help couples have informed, calm and relaxed births for their babies, qualifying to teach KGHypnobirthing in 2014. I continue to teach KGH to this day through my NormalBirthing classes. I work closely with many highly respected birth professionals, and continue my CPD through regular courses and workshops.
Although I have been photographing since my school days, I turned professional in 2012. At this time I trained in Newborn Photography with an award winning newborn photographer, and specialised in this, Wedding Photography and family portraiture. After becoming Norfolk’s first birth photographer when I photographed my first birth a the Norfolk and Norwich MLBU in 2013, I knew I had found a very special blend of my two life passions.
I love providing everlasting memories of life-changing times to my clients, and for this reason I now specialise in documentary birth, family and wedding photography.
I am more than a photographer in the dark corners of the room. I am a birth professional who will work with your midwives and your birth team to tell your story in a way that doesn’t disturb the flow of your labour. Birth Photographers have to think on our feet; we can’t control lighting, often we have little control over angles and we definitely can’t pose a shot, and of course birth can sometimes be unpredictable and fast paced. We have to deal with the roller coaster of emotions that comes with birth and maintain our professionalism. By having expert knowledge in labour and birth, and many years experience behind me in reportage wedding and birth photography, my job comes naturally to me and I love it! Every birth is so special, and I feel so fortunate to be able to tell the story of so many babies’ welcome into the world.
